Kevin lay back and tightened his grip on Alex. He should just enjoy being here with him, glad their relationship was progressing and not bring up potentially dangerous topics. Was he trying to fuck things up with Alex already?
Alex sat up and looked Kevin right in the eye.
Uh oh.
“So you never did tell me about that toy you wouldn’t let go of. I asked your whole family and no one would say.”
“About the only time they ever kept anything a secret.”
“So, you gonna tell me?”
“What’s it worth to you?” Kevin grinned.
“I’d offer sexual favors, but you’d get those either way. What would you like?”
Kevin pondered for a moment. What did he want from Alex? He might have said he wanted everything from Alex, but now Kevin understood he didn’t want anything from Alex; he just wanted to be good enough to deserve Alex. Of course, he couldn’t say that out loud. But admitting it might be easier than admitting the truth about the toy.
“I don’t want anything… No, I take that back. Just one thing. You have to promise not to laugh.”
“Okay.” Alex visibly attempted to wipe the grin off his face. “I won’t laugh,” he said, failing to stifle a laugh.
“You can’t stop and you haven’t even heard it yet.”
“Come on.” He smoothed the backs of his fingers against Kevin’s cheek. “Promise. And if I laugh, you can ask me something.”
“I suppose that’s fair.” Could he trust Alex not to laugh? Everyone in his family had laughed about it, teased him about it. He didn’t want to feel ridiculous in front of Alex. Kevin glanced up at Alex’s wide, sincere smile and the amusement dancing in his eyes. What if Alex laughed? Did it mean Alex didn’t care for him?
“Well?” Alex cocked an eyebrow.
An invisible forced close in and squeezed Kevin’s heart so hard he thought it would stop beating. He could go into a burning building, climb up onto a roof, and tell a woman her son was dead; he could do this.
“Uh, it was Smurfette.” He braced himself for the worst.
Alex’s mouth curved into a grin and he nodded. “Smurfette? That’s cute. I thought you were going to say Godzilla, ‘cause that’s not cute at all. ” He leaned down and planted a soft kiss on Kevin’s lips.
Kevin was about to ask Alex if he’d ever had a toy he wouldn’t give up, then the reality of Alex’s childhood came crashing down on him again, like it had when he’d spotted the scars on his body again. Maybe Alex never got any toys at all, and here Kevin had been embarrassed for liking a toy he’d stolen from his sister. He’d learned that kids like Alex were grateful for any toy; they didn’t get to pick and choose.
Kevin kissed back, gently at first, then he parted his lips and took Alex’s mouth hungrily. As they kissed, a million tiny revelations clicked into place. Kevin realized how stupid he’d been for so long, about so many things.
